Vertigo

If you have ever suffered from vertigo you’d know how debilitating the dizziness can be and how it impacts your everyday life. Symptoms include episodes of severe dizziness as if the room is moving but you’re not. These symptoms can be so severe that it leads to nausea and vomiting in some cases.

These vertigo episodes are commonly caused by a dysfunction in the signal coming from one of your inner ear organs. Our bodies balance system comprises of two vestibular organs behind each ear that work together to feedback to the brain information about where your head is in space. If this signal is impaired one side it creates a disequilibrium, which tricks your brain into thinking that your head is moving very quickly when it isn’t. You may just be turning over in bed, but the brain feels like you’ve just got off a rollercoaster ride. So in response you get washed over with a wave of dizziness and nausea, which is your bodies protective response to tell you to stop moving. It is often not known what can cause this dysfunction to develop and there are many different conditions responsible for causing vertigo.

That is why it is important to see a qualified healthcare professional who is able to properly assess you to figure out what condition is causing your dizziness. At The Physio Rooms Woodvale our practitioners are trained to diagnose and treat common vestibular disorders such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and vestibular hypofunction. But more importantly we are able to screen your central nervous system to rule out more insidious causes.
